Prescription Painkiller Use Highest in Southern States

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlights the rate of prescription painkiller usage in each state.

The findings show that Southern states have some of the highest rates, indicating a need for a change in the way drugs are prescribed, as current practices contribute to fatal overdoses. In 2012 alone, 259 million opioid painkiller prescriptions were written — enough for every single adult in the US to have one bottle of prescription painkillers.

Alabama, West Virginia, and Tennessee were among some of the highest for prescription painkillers per person.
